One of the best fabrics you can dress your baby in is natural fibres, like Merino wool. Besides being silky soft and gentle on baby’s sensitive skin, there are many benefits to dressing your baby – and your baby bump – in Merino.
Henry and Grace is the newest maternity and baby wear brand with a gorgeous range of clothing for babies and Mamas, all made using the finest, rare Merino wool produced on their farm, ‘Gostwyck’.
Merino wool is a natural insulator. For babies, this is extra beneficial because it holds in their body heat, allows their skin to breathe and helps to prevent them from sweating. Retaining body heat is ideal for babies, as they aren’t able to regulate their own body temperature until they’re around 18 months of age.
Baby wear and maternity clothing made from Merino also helps to manage moisture and temperature: two very important factors for both pregnant women and for babies, especially as both are prone to over-heating in synthetic fabrics.
Known for its quality and comfort, Merino wool makes the perfect maternity wear, not only because it’s incredibly comfortable, but it keeps you cool when it’s warm and warm when it’s cold. Henry and Grace have launched the most stylish, comfortable and practical range of Maternity Wear – dresses, tops, leggings and scarves, and Baby Wear, including blankets, wraps, bodysuits, leggings, hoodies and beanies.
I had a chat to the team from Henry and Grace to find out more…
Tell us a bit about Henry and Grace?
The most comfortable clothes for mothers and babies. We make all our garments using the ultra-fine merino wool from our family farm in the New England Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia. The brand name Henry and Grace comes from Henry and Grace Dangar who established ‘Gostwyck’ as a merino sheep station in 1834. In more than 180 years, and five generations since then, we have created the finest merino wool to create the most comfortable clothes for mothers and babies.
Why did you decide to produce baby and maternity wear?
We had been growing wool for generations and seeing it go into men’s suits or be blended with other inferior wools and being made into scratchy jumpers, until finally we decided that enough was enough.
The ultrafine merino that we produce on Gostwyck has incredible natural benefits, it is ideal for sensitive skin, can regulate body temperature, wicks moisture away from the skin, and resists odours. We wanted to share this with the people who needed it most and that is why we chose mothers and babies.
With these natural properties it was obvious to us that mothers and babies would benefit most from our merino. Throughout pregnancy, a mother’s body goes through incredible stresses and we wanted to give her the most comfortable clothes possible to try and take one of those stresses away. Babies, meanwhile, would be kept 100% comfortable at all times and in all weather conditions.
What makes Henry and Grace different from other Merino clothing?
We follow our wool from farm to fashion, this means that we can guarantee pure comfort in the knowledge that you are wearing the finest itch free Australian merino wool, ethically and sustainably grown, independently certified by the Responsible Wool Standard.
Not all wool is created equal, it can vary even among merino. No doubt a great number of people have been put off by scratchy wool jumpers of years gone by. But it doesn’t have to be that way, at Henry and Grace your comfort is our highest priority.
As the wool grower we can ensure that only the finest Gostwyck merino goes into henry and grace garments. At shearing time we test the micron of every fleece with only 15 micron wool making the cut. This means the quality of wool we use is finer than cashmere and guaranteed to be 100% comfortable next to skin.
Why is Merino wool so comfortable as maternity wear?
It is the ability to adapt to any situation that is what means that you will stay comfortable in merino. Whatever the day throws at you the ultrafine merino of Henry and Grace will keep you cool when it’s warm and warm when it’s cold. Our loose fitting designs and the natural stretch of the merino means you’ll be comfortable right through your pregnancy as well. Finally, the constant refrain that we hear is that our leggings don’t roll down, even as you bump continues to grow.
Does merino wool have any benefits for babies?
Ultrafine Merino has a range of benefits that make it ideal for babies and babywear; It is gentle on sensitive skin, can help manage both temperature and moisture, can help babies get to sleep quicker, is non-allergenic, and odour resistant.
Ultrafine Merino has been clinically proven to reduce symptoms in sufferers of eczema when compared with cotton and other clothing fibres. With allergies on the rise it is also important to note that clean merino wool has no known allergens. This makes it ideal for the sensitive skin of babies.
Ultrafine Merino insulates against the elements, allowing it to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. In addition to this it can also wick moisture away from the skin to help babies stay dry and comfortable all day long. Then in the evening the temperature management lets babies reach their optimum temperature more quickly letting them get to sleep more quickly while the wool also insulates them from temperature changes through the night allowing them to sleep longer.
Finally, merino is naturally odour resistant. This, combined with the machine wash ability of Henry and Grace garments makes them ideal for parents, given the messes and smells that go hand in hand with caring for little ones.
Is it harder to care for merino wool products than other fabrics?
Not at all, all our garments are machine washable. It is important to us to make sure that we make the lives of busy parents as easy as possible which is why we made sure that all our products can go straight in the wash.
Why is merino wool so comfortable?
The ultra-fine fibres of merino wool are exceptionally soft and gentle on the skin. At 15 microns thick the ultra-fine merino that we use is one seventh the width of a human hair. This fineness means that the wool easily bends and flexes without irritating the skin. It is only by testing every fleece at shearing to select the finest wool that we can guarantee the next to skin comfort. The natural properties of the wool then act to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer.
Merino is known for its quality. How long do the products last?
If properly cared for it can last for years to be constantly used in the case of the maternity wear or handed on in the case of the babywear. If being stored long term we simply suggest that you keep a bar of natural soap near your wool garments as this acts a moth repellent.
Is there a particular product/s in the range you’re most proud of?
It is always difficult to pick one over and above the rest because we love them all for different reasons. The Wrap dresses are a standout for their versatility. We have had customers wear them from conception right through their pregnancy and long after, the whole time looking and feeling great. Similarly the baby bodysuits are great on their own but they can also be an ideal base layer providing guaranteed next to skin comfort while looking great as part of any outfit.
Do you have any plans to expand the range?
Always open to new ideas and looking to keep things fresh for mothers and gift buyers!
