Bedhead Hats donating $100K of sunhats to kids in need

I’m passionate about sun safety for my three girls; they’re always wearing sun hats when we are outside during the warmer months.

The new range of sunhats from Bedhead Hats are a favourite with their wide brim, functional styles and gorgeous prints and colours for boys and girls. I have found that many kids hats on the market look cute but the brim isn’t wide enough to protect their face or neck from the sunshine. Or the brim is so wide that after a few wears they flop into their faces. Not Bedheads.

With a very out-doorsy little boy, Bedhead Hats creator Richelle Ellis desperately searched for a baby-friendly hat that provided optimum sun protection, but only found heavy, hot canvases with floppy brims that were either too big or uncomfortable for her baby. So created Bedhead Hats with UPF protective fabric, a wide-angled brim for extra sun protection with a clever angled design to stay on small heads!

“Like many parents, I found that familiarising a baby early on with the sensation of wearing a hat is the first step in teaching responsible sun safety skills. I want to educate more parents about this and design the most comfortable and protective hats for children of all ages,” Richelle explains.

The quality of Bedhead Hats is excellent – the brim doesn’t droop into their face, the cord is thick so they’re easy to adjust and keep under their chin, the fabric provides UPF protection and most importantly, they stay on.

There is even a girls’ range with ponytail holes at the back which is such a great idea, and so handy for keeping their hair off their neck on warm days.

The range of Bedhead Hats goes from newborn right up to 6 years of age, but my 7 year old daughter still wears her hat comfortably – the sizes are very generous. There are legionnaire hats, bucket hats, swimming hats and school hats. They even have warm woolly hats for the cooler months.

In Australia we have one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Not everyone realises that sun exposure in the first 10 years of a child’s life plays a huge role in determining the lifetime risk of skin cancer.

Discovering this Richelle created the ‘Protect the Potential’ community initiative that will see Bedhead Hats give away a massive $100,000 of hats to newborns right across Australia, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

For every order you place online, Bedhead Hats will donate one newborn hat.

“I wish for all babies to have the best protection from the sun to reach their full potential in life. By launching the ‘Protect the Potential’ initiative we are doing our part to make a difference for the next generation of children,” Richelle says.

From September 15 2017 for each order placed online at, a newborn hat will be gifted or donated. Customers have the choice to gift the hat to someone they know in need or donate to charity aiding disadvantaged mothers and babies.

All Bedhead Hats have a UPF 50+ Excellent Protection rating, are made with a resilient stretch cotton that grows with the child with brims that stay firmly out of the child’s eyeline.

To be a part of the ‘Protect the Potential’ community drive visit, purchase any hat of your choice then select ‘GIFT’ or ‘DONATE’ at the cart screen to pass one on to a child in need.

To launch the fantastic ‘Protect the Potential’ campaign Bedhead Hats are giving one lucky Stylish Bump reader the chance to WIN two Bedhead Hats of their choice. Simply comment below what you love about Bedhead Hats with your Instagram handle (for example @katejones)  for your chance to win.

Winner will be announced on Stylish Bump Instagram on Sunday 1 October 2017. Good luck.

I love the fact that you can leave the baby bucket hats in whilst in the pram. This is a god send during summer walks when the hood of thebprm doesn’t completely block out the suns rays. ❤️

I love the wide brim that covers the eyes and chin but most of all I love the fact they’re donating hats to babies and make efforts to raise awareness for protection from the sun! @rotem_s_

With our first baby on the way, we would love a bedhead hat to use on those warm summer days. Our baby is due in Spring and my bestie is due is Summer, I’d give the second one to her for her little newcomer!

What’s not to love!? I love the patterns and that they are not ‘floppy’ like other broad brimmed hats. Super stylish and practical!
